New Zealand went in with an unchanged XI as their captain Kane Williamson chose to bowl in the second Test at the Hagley Oval. On a pitch that looked hard and dry, Williamson hoped his bowlers would give him a better start than they had in Wellington, where Bangladesh declared on 595 for 8 in their first innings.
Bangladesh, who still lost that Test, made four changes as they dealt with an injury crisis that left them without their captain Mushfiqur Rahim and two top-order batsmen in Imrul Kayes and Mominul Haque. They brought in two debutants in the left-hand middle-order batsman Nazmul Hossain Shanto and the wicketkeeper-batsman Nurul Hasan, and brought Soumya Sarkar back into the side to open for the first time in Test cricket, alongside the stand-in captain Tamim Iqbal.
Rubel Hossain, meanwhile, replaced Subhashis Roy in their three-man pace attack.
