An unbroken 86-run partnership between Tom Latham and Kane Williamson stretched New Zealand’s lead to 152 by lunch on day four of the Hamilton Test. Pakistan’s seamers strove hard and used the new ball skillfully, but batting became easier as the two-and-a-half-hour-long session wore on, on a pitch that seemed to be flattening out, and under bright blue skies.

Another dropped catch, Sami Aslam’s third of the match, compounded Pakistan’s frustrations. Mohammad Amir, inevitably, was the bowler. Batting on 39 with 2.3 overs to go for lunch, Latham pulled him in the air, to the left of midwicket. Aslam dived and got his left hand to the ball, but couldn’t hold on. In Amir’s next over, Latham rubbed it in, straight-driving, flicking, and pulling him for three fours to go to lunch batting on 53. Williamson was batting on 37.
