Steven Smith lost the toss for the sixth consecutive Test and South Africa’s captain Faf du Plessis chose to bat in the day-night Test at Adelaide Oval.

South Africa made one change to the XI that triumphed in Hobart, bringing in the left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi for his Test debut at the expense of left-arm orthodox spinner Keshav Maharaj.

“He’s been extremely hard to pick with the pink ball, so we’re hoping he’ll be a real trump,” du Plessis said of Shamsi at the toss. “Just going on what we’ve seen facing him in the nets, he’s been unbelievably hard to pick.”

Australia had confirmed their XI on the eve of the match and there were no late surprises. The Australians made five changes from their Hobart side, with Joe Burns, Joe Mennie, Adam Voges, Peter Nevill and Callum Ferguson all left out.

Batsmen Matt Renshaw, Peter Handscomb and Nic Maddinson will all make their Test debuts, while fast bowler Jackson Bird has returned to the side for the first time since the tour of New Zealand earlier this year, and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade is in for his first Test since the 2013 tour of India.
