MS Dhoni, the Rising Pune Supergiants captain, chose to bat first in the afternoon game against Kings XI Punjab in Mohali. With temperatures in the mid-30s at the start of the game, Dhoni preferred that his team field in cooler evening conditions, and expected the pitch not to change too much over the course of the game.
Supergiants made three changes to the side that lost by seven wickets to Gujarat Lions. Thisara Perera and Irfan Pathan replaced fellow seam-bowling allrounders Mitchell Marsh and Rajat Bhatia, while left-arm spinner Ankit Sharma came into the side in place of the left-arm quick RP Singh.
Kings XI, who have lost both their matches so far, made one change to their pace attack, bringing in their new signing Kyle Abbott for Mitchell Johnson.
