On March 3, 2016, former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe died, aged 53, in Auckland after a battle with lymphoma. Crowe scored a New Zealand record 17 Test centuries, and was instrumental in his side reaching the 1992 World Cup semi-final. Knee problems forced him to retire at the age of 33, after which he served the game as a writer, commentator, and as the inventor of Cricket Max, the precursor to T20s.
