Leicestershire performance director Andrew McDonald has backed compatriot Trevor Bayliss to ensure a successful campaign for England at the ICC World Twenty20.
Former Australia international McDonald thinks Bayliss’ experience of coaching on the sub-continent, especially in India, could prove to be a key factor for England.
Bayliss led Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League and has also coached Sri Lanka.
With England hoping to build the platform for another exciting display of attacking cricket, McDonald can see no reason why they cannot match up against the rest of the world.
“I think they’re in good order,” McDonald told ecb.co.uk. “Trevor Bayliss knows India well.
“I think they have strong leadership in Trevor Bayliss and Eoin Morgan.
“The freedom that they’re playing with – to play T20 you have got to be brave – they’ve instilled that bravery and freedom into that group.
“There’s been some criticism that they’ve been going too hard and about finding that balance.
“But if they play with freedom and truly believe that they can win that tournament, which Trevor Bayliss, knowing him quite well, will be instilling, they can go as far as any other team.”
