‘Dirty whites, sweaty black caps, and a beer in hand’
Australia’s captain Steven Smith won the toss and chose to send New Zealand in to bat in the first Test at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
Brendon McCullum, playing his 100th and penultimate Test match, admitted he would also have bowled first on a well-grassed pitch.
Both sides had nominated their chosen XIs on match eve. Jackson Bird was picked ahead of James Pattinson as the third seamer for Australia, his first Test match in three years, while Peter Siddle regains his place, having missed the Sydney Test against West Indies.
New Zealand handed Henry Nicholls a debut at No. 4 in place of the unfit Ross Taylor, while Corey Anderson and Mark Craig are in for Mitchell Santner (foot injury) and Neil Wagner (left out).
The pitch in at Basin Reserve has lost some of its earlier greenery but remains a surface likely to assist the seam bowlers on the first day. The weather in Wellington is fine and sunny.
New Zealand 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Tom Latham, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Henry Nicholls, 5 Brendon McCullum (capt), 6 Corey Anderson, 7 BJ Watling (wk), 8 Doug Bracewell, 9 Mark Craig, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Trent Boult
Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Joe Burns, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 Adam Voges, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Peter Nevill (wk), 8 Peter Siddle, 9 Josh Hazlewood, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Jackson Bird
