Sydney: Australia’s cricket coach Darren Lehmann will miss his team’s one-day international tour of New Zealand in early February after suffering from deep vein thrombosis, officials said Tuesday.
Lehmann has already been replaced by batting coach Michael Di Venuto for Australia’s three-match Twenty20 series against India after he was admitted to a Sydney hospital on Saturday with a swollen calf.
“Darren is in good health and feeling well at the moment but is still awaiting medical clearance for us to be satisfied that it is safe for him to fly,” Cricket Australia’s chief medical officer John Orchard said in a statement Tuesday.
The squad is due to depart for New Zealand on February 1.
“As such he will not travel to New Zealand for the one-day international series,” Orchard added.
“He is meeting with specialists in Sydney later this week and will have repeat scans on Friday to check his progress.
“It is anticipated he will be fit to resume work in the coming weeks.”
Cricket Australia’s team performance head Pat Howard said he was waiting for medical advice from specialists before appointing an interim coach for the New Zealand tour.
“It is anticipated that Darren will make it back for the Test series (on February 12 and 20 in New Zealand), but as with all the decisions we make, we will be guided by medical advice,” Howard said.
The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series starts in Auckland on February 3 and moves on to Wellington on February 6 and Hamilton on February 8, with the Test matches to follow.
