Joe Root and James Taylor offered a glimmer of hope to England as they battled to save the fourth and final Test at Centurion.
The tourists lost three quick wickets in pursuit of 382 after South Africa declared on 248 for five, with a rain delay hastening AB de Villiers’ decision.
Root survived a missed stumping and a reviewed lbw appeal, but shared an unbroken stand of 34 before stumps to leave England with seven wickets in hand to try and see out the final day tomorrow.
