Past Performances and IPL Titles of Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings is the only team that has qualified for the knockouts and the playoffs consecutively in the first ten seasons that they were a part of, including three titles, a run that ended in 2020.

Although the team won two IPL championships after that, the going hasn’t been as smooth as it was in the previous decade, having failed to make it to the top four in four of the last six seasons.

2008-2013

CSK had a good start to their campaign in the IPL as the then MS Dhoni-led side played the final of the inaugural edition against the Rajasthan Royals.

The Men in Yellow kept the good work going by booking a spot in the knockouts in 2009 as well and again played the final in 2010 against a team that is going to meet them frequently in the title clash Mumbai Indians.

Chennai Super Kings were strong contenders to win an IPL title since the first season, and the wait was over when they won it in 2010 and became the first team to defend it in 2011.

One of the reasons that they started the tournament as favourites in the initial years was due to their strong Indian core, which included MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravichandran Ashwin, and was later joined by Ravindra Jadeja.

2014-2019

Despite putting on consistent performance after defending its title, CSK had to wait till 2018 to win the IPL for the third time.

It was an ending that a team dreams of, as nobody gave CSK a chance to even qualify for the playoffs, let alone win the trophy, as they had a number of players who were deemed too old for T20 cricket.

But the Dad’s Army defied all odds and went on to lift its third title, making it the second most successful IPL team after the Mumbai Indians.

CSK almost became the only team to defend their title twice in IPL when they faced MI in the final in 2019, but fell agonizingly short by one run.

2020-2025

2020 was the first instance when the Chennai Super Kings finished in the bottom half of the table as they were below par in all three departments of the game that season, but made a strong comeback and won their fourth IPL title in 2021.

A similar story was replicated in the following two years, with the defending champions getting knocked out in the first round and becoming the most successful IPL team the next year.

Having said that, the previous two editions haven’t gone as per CSK’s expectations, having missed the playoff spot by the barest of margins in 2024 and struggling to find the right combination in 2025.
