Shreyas Iyer is just a few hours away from leading India for the first time as the full-time T20I captain, and Mohammad Kaif believes the new captain has one big advantage against Ireland. The Men in Blue are all set to face Ireland in the two-match T20I series opener on June 26 in Belfast.
Many people feel captaining India is the hardest job in cricket, but Kaif feels leading the national team is actually less challenging than leading an IPL side because the players already know their roles. Well, Shreyas Iyer has already delivered his first speech as India’s T20I captain.
Mohammad Kaif explains why Shreyas Iyer has an advantage ahead of his captaincy debut
Ahead of Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy debut, Mohammad Kaif explained that an IPL captain has a lot more work to do. Every season, he has to find the right combination, manage Indian and overseas players, and help young cricketers settle into the team.
That is why the former Indian batter feels IPL captaincy brings more pressure than people usually think. He added that captaining the Indian team is ‘comparatively easier’ because there is no need to groom the players, who know what the coaches expect from them and understand their responsibilities. This will make things easy for Iyer as the captain.
Mohammad Kaif says IPL captaincy is tougher than leading India
Mohammad Kaif said in a video posted on his YouTube channel, “I think it will be a little easier for him. IPL captaincy is tougher because you have seven Indian players and four overseas players. Out of those seven Indians, you have to pick the best combination. There are also two or three young players in the squad whom you have to guide and groom.
It requires a lot more effort. Captaining the Indian team is a bit easier because everyone already knows their role. This isn’t a squad full of uncapped or inexperienced players that you need to manage from scratch. That’s why I say the job becomes a little easier.”
Mohammad Kaif reveals the one decision Shreyas Iyer won’t compromise on
Meanwhile, Kaif also stressed that Shreyas Iyer will not interfere in every decision that is supposed to be handled by the coaching staff and team management. However, when it comes to his batting position, Iyer will make sure the team management understands where he wants to bat.
Kaif signed off by saying, “By ‘push,’ I don’t mean there will be any conflict or argument. It’s not about fighting. It simply means he’ll put forward his case strongly. He’ll say, ‘I believe this is the best batting position for me in this Indian team.’ Whether Gautam Gambhir agrees with him or not is a different matter. I’m only talking about Iyer’s mindset as a player.”
Gautam Gambhir returns to Ireland as coach as India aim to continue dominance
Well, India has completely dominated Ireland in T20I cricket so far. The two teams have faced each other eight times, and India has won all eight matches, with their last meeting during the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York.
The upcoming T20I match in Belfast will be India’s first-ever T20I at the Stormont Cricket Ground. They have played only one international match at this venue before—an ODI against Ireland in 2007.
In that game, current India head coach Gautam Gambhir played a match-winning unbeaten knock of 80 runs and was named the Player of the Match. Now, nearly two decades later, Gambhir returns to the same ground, but this time as India’s head coach.
