England captain Ben Stokes has dismissed suggestions of a rift with head coach Brendon McCullum following the nightclub controversy that temporarily sidelined him from the national team earlier this month.
The relationship between the two came under intense scrutiny after Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were dropped for the second Test against New Zealand while investigations into a nightclub incident were ongoing. Speculation only intensified when McCullum publicly admitted he had concerns about his captain during the fallout.
However, speaking ahead of the series-deciding third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, Ben Stokes firmly rejected claims that his relationship with McCullum had deteriorated.

The controversy began after England’s 115-run win over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s. Ben Stokes and Atkinson breached the team’s midnight curfew and later attended the Rex Rooms nightclub in Chelsea.
Although both men were subsequently cleared of violent misconduct by the ECB and the independent Cricket Regulator, the incident sparked widespread debate over Ben Stokes’ leadership and his relationship with McCullum, who has been vocal about improving England’s culture off the field.
Addressing the speculation directly, Ben Stokes insisted there was a misunderstanding surrounding his bond with the New Zealand great.
“There’s been a big misconception around me and Brendon. Me and Brendon have a professional relationship in terms of him being head coach and me being captain, but then we’ve also got a relationship away from that,” Ben Stokes said.
“We genuinely are very good mates, and have built a rapport away from cricket. We’ve been through some testing times, great times, do we agree on everything? Absolutely not. Not agreeing on everything shouldn’t be seen as a divide between me and Brendon.
“You are allowed to disagree and have discussions. Our relationship goes beyond me being captain and him head coach,” Stokes said at the press conference as quoted by SkySports.
The pair have worked together since the start of the Bazball era and have overseen England’s remarkable transformation in Test cricket over the last four years.

During the investigation period, McCullum openly expressed concern about Stokes, leading some observers to believe tensions existed behind the scenes.
The England captain, however, believes those comments were taken out of context and were simply made by a friend who cared.
“Friends care for each other, don’t they? Just like I think anyone else would if someone was worried about one of their friends, then how they portray that in front of quite a lot of people, it’s not an easy thing to do, I don’t think,” he said.
“I think just give Brendon a break on all that. It was a hard thing for him to do to come up here and speak about that, I’m sure. I knew what he was meaning. He cares about me, he cares about members of that team as well. So I think don’t read into his words too much.”
McCullum later acknowledged there had been some ambiguity around how England’s curfew guidelines had originally been communicated to players, while both investigations ultimately found Stokes and Atkinson blameless regarding the altercation itself.
England captain says difficult period may strengthen partnership
The controversy had a significant impact on England’s campaign. Without Stokes and Atkinson, England suffered a crushing 253-run defeat in the second Test at The Oval as New Zealand levelled the series at 1-1.
Stokes revealed that despite the public speculation, he and McCullum remained in constant contact throughout the ordeal.
“It’s a good question that [are you closer to McCullum?]. We certainly haven’t drifted apart. There’s been big speculation about it.
“I guess when you do go through difficult times, you do find a different side to a relationship maybe than you never thought you could have. You don’t plan on going through something like this together in a professional environment.
“But me and Brendon were talking pretty much every day, especially in the initial period. When the game started, Baz concentrated on the team as he needed to.
“Maybe in the future we’ll look back on this and say this did bring us tighter and closer. But this ‘rift’ and ‘drifting apart,’ that’s certainly not the case.”
With both men now reunited ahead of the decisive third Test, England will be hoping to move beyond the off-field distractions and secure a series victory against New Zealand, while Stokes and McCullum look to put any lingering speculation firmly to rest.
