During the India vs Afghanistan third and final ODI match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, in the first innings, the Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi scored his maiden ODI hundred 14 years later after making his debut back in 2012. This is a historic moment for the Afghan skipper, who played a fighting knock for his team.

The Afghan captain scored a fighting hundred as he was struggling in the match with cramps due to the hot and humid conditions in Chennai. He managed to score his maiden hundred, and this knock will be special as the team was 36/4 at one stage, and he, with Azmatullah Omarzai, stitched a 105-run partnership between them.

Hashmatullah Shahidi scores his maiden ODI hundred

Hashmatullah Shahidi scored his hundred off 126 balls, which became the second-slowest hundred by an Afghan batter, joining hands with Ibrahim Zadran, scoring in 131 balls during the ODI World Cup 2023. The Afghan skipper stuck at one end despite the wickets tumbling at one stage, and the century was looking tough, but he hung on and scored the ton.

After his century, he also entered a unique list of batters for most days taken from ODI debut to score a maiden 100. He made his debut back in 2012, and 14 years later, which is 4644 days later, he scored his hundred, joining hands with Sunil Gavaskar and Arjuna Ranatunga, who did so in 4858 and 4674 days, respectively.

Hashmatullah Shahidi had the highest score of 97 runs before this match. However, soon after scoring his century, he was dismissed for 102 runs off 131 deliveries, smashing 13 fours and one six by Prasidh Krishna, who bowled excellently, picking up his maiden fifer in ODI cricket.

Coming to the match, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and elected to bat first. It was al Prasidh Krishna in the hot afternoon of Chennai as he picked four wickets in his four overs. With three batters giving out a catch to Rohit Sharma at slips.
