The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has responded to the controversy involving Vaibhav Sooryavanshi following his on-field altercation with Vishen Halambage. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia urged the India A players to remain focused on their cricket rather than getting distracted by off-field controversies.
The viral incident occurred after the Tri-Nation A Series match between India A and Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla on Sunday, July 15. The match ended in dramatic fashion, with both teams scoring 265 runs before Sri Lanka A secured victory in the Super Over.
They Should Concentrate on Their Game Rather Than Getting Distracted – Devajit Saikia on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Devajit Saikia urged the India A players to stay focused on the ongoing Tri-Nation A Series and avoid getting distracted by off-field controversies. He stated that the tournament is an important opportunity for young cricketers to impress the selectors and strengthen their case for a place in the senior national team.
“India A is playing a major tournament, all the upcoming players who can stake their claim for the Indian senior team, they are in the midst of a very big tournament, a tri-nation series, so they should concentrate on their game rather than getting distracted from any collateral issues,” Saikia told TOI on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka A posted 16 runs in the Super Over and set India A a target of 17. However, India A managed only nine runs, as fast bowler Kugathas Mathulan kept Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge under pressure to seal victory for the hosts.
The Players Are Only Concentrated With Their Games – Devajit Saikia on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Incident
Devajit Saikia said the board will not directly intervene in the altercation involving Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Vishen Halambage. He said that player management and disciplinary matters are handled by the team management and coaching staff.
“It is not our duty to speak to the players for any reason. The players are only concentrated with their games and the support staff and the coaches who are present with them, nothing else. So, nobody interferes in their game and their strategy and their preparation for that big series, which is presently going on.”
“We will follow this policy that during a major tournament when they are playing for the country, they should not get distracted by any other secondary issues, which are not of paramount importance. The important thing is India’s winning and performing well in the tri-series. So, that is our focus and other than that, we are not doing anything at this stage.”
It Was Like the Team Was Playing Against 13 Players – India A
The Times of India report claimed that the players were unhappy with several officiating decisions during the match. A number of key calls went against India A and contributed to frustration within the dressing room after the defeat.
“It was like the team was playing against 13 players. Some of the on-field decisions of the match officials were highly questionable. Shedge (72 off 66 balls) was wrongly adjudged caught on the long-on boundary, as the fielder’s boot had stamped the rope. The no-ball and wide decisions in the final over were doubtful. The umpires decided to play the Super Over only when Sri Lanka A agreed to it,” the source said.
Suryansh Shedge pointed his bat toward Vishen Halambage before tensions escalated. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi then became involved in a brief physical confrontation with the Sri Lanka A player. Sooryavanshi was also seen exchanging gestures during a verbal altercation involving Halambage and Wanuja Sahan.
