West Indies National Cricket Team have announced their squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with several notable returns grabbing attention ahead of the start of the new assignment in Antigua.
The series, scheduled to be played entirely at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, comes at a crucial stage of the World Test Championship cycle for the Caribbean side. After enduring a difficult campaign that has left them rooted to the bottom of the WTC standings, the Men in Maroon will be desperate to finish the cycle strongly before home Tests against Pakistan and a tour of Bangladesh later this year.
West Indies squad for Sri Lanka Tests full details: Joshua Da Silva and Amir Jangoo return
The biggest talking point from the West Indies squad announcement is the return of wicketkeeper-batter Joshua Da Silva and Trinidad & Tobago batter Amir Jangoo.
Da Silva forced his way back into the national setup after enjoying a prolific run in domestic cricket. The 33-Test veteran accumulated 996 runs across the last two editions of the West Indies Championship, making himself impossible to ignore for the selectors. His return comes after Tevin Imlach kept wickets during West Indies’ most recent Test series in New Zealand.
Jangoo has also earned a well-deserved recall after a sensational domestic season. The left-hander finished as one of the leading run-scorers in the West Indies Championship, amassing 411 runs in just seven innings. His campaign included a magnificent unbeaten double century (203*) for Trinidad & Tobago against Leeward Islands. The upcoming Sri Lanka series will mark his first Test squad selection since January 2025.
There is more good news for West Indies with pace spearheads Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph returning after injury setbacks forced them to miss the tours of India and New Zealand late last year. The duo last featured in Test cricket during the home series against Australia in 2025 and significantly strengthen the bowling attack.
Roston Chase will lead the side, while experienced spinner Jomel Warrican has been named vice-captain.
Every Test series is an opportunity for us to grow – Daren Sammy
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy believes the upcoming Sri Lanka series presents another important opportunity for the team to continue building its identity in the longest format.
With several senior players returning and a lengthy preparation camp underway in Antigua, Sammy is hopeful the side can produce a strong performance in front of home supporters.
“Every Test series is an opportunity for us to grow as a team and strengthen our identity. Sri Lanka are a quality side, so we know we’ll have to be at our best, but we’re excited about the challenge ahead.”
Sammy also stressed the importance of discipline and resilience as the team looks to finish the WTC cycle on a positive note.
“For us, it’s about playing with discipline, showing character when the game gets tough, and representing the West Indies with pride. The players have been putting in the work, and we’re looking forward to putting on a strong display for our fans across the Caribbean.”
The West Indies squad is currently participating in a high-performance training camp in Antigua, running from June 12 to June 22. According to Sammy, the camp is helping the coaching staff assess player readiness while fine-tuning plans for both the Sri Lanka series and the subsequent home assignment against Pakistan.
“This is a key component of our preparations heading into the series, providing players and coaches with valuable time to enhance and improve the skills we want to see sharpened, based on the areas we need to focus our attention on when facing this opponent.”
“Additionally, the four-day warm-up game prior to the series provides the chance for some of our test hopefuls to play in high intensity action and create the avenue for more competition within the squad ahead of the upcoming and future series.”
