Vaibhav Sooryavanshi-Sri Lanka star clash: Full details of viral on-field altercation revealed

India A batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi found himself at the center of a controversy after an on-field altercation with Sri Lanka A fielder Vishen Halambage. The incident reportedly occurred after Halambage told the young batter to “go home” following a tense finish to the match.

The confrontation took place after the Tri-Nation A Series match between India A and Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Monday, July 15. Sri Lanka A, led by Sahan Arachchige, eventually won the contest in a Super Over after the match ended in a tie.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Involved in Heated Exchange After Sri Lanka A Defeat

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Vishen Halambage exchanged words with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after Sri Lanka A’s victory and told him, “Match over… now you go home.”

The comment angered Sooryavanshi, who turned back toward the Sri Lanka A players. The situation quickly escalated, with both players shoving each other before teammates stepped in. Sri Lanka A wicketkeeper, Niroshan Dickwella, was among those who intervened and helped separate the pair.

Despite the incident, players from both teams completed the customary post-match handshakes. The report added that members of the Sri Lanka A camp considered visiting the India A dressing room to apologize for the on-field confrontation.

Meanwhile, Sooryavanshi has endured a difficult Tri-Nation A Series campaign with the bat. The 15-year-old has scored 12, 44, and 21 in his first three innings of the tournament.

There Should Never Have Been a Super Over in the First Place – Sri Lanka Cricket

A Sri Lanka Cricket official questioned the decision to hold a Super Over, saying the match should not have gone ahead under the fading light conditions. The official felt that player safety and playing conditions should have taken priority over forcing a result.

“There should never have been a Super Over in the first place.”

The match ended in a tie after both India A and Sri Lanka A scored 265 runs. Sri Lanka A finished on 265/9 in 50 overs. Earlier, India posted a total of 265 in 49.2 overs.

According to the report, India A captain Tilak Varma pushed for the Super Over and discussed the matter with the umpires despite concerns about the available light. The Sri Lanka A camp, meanwhile, was reportedly reluctant to continue under the conditions.

In the Super Over, India A pacer Arshad Khan conceded 16 runs. Chasing 17 for victory, India A managed only nine runs, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hitting one boundary against 19-year-old Sri Lanka A fast bowler Kugathas Mathulan.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi-Vishen Halambage Incident Could Lead to Disciplinary Action

The altercation between Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Vishen Halambage could result in disciplinary action from the relevant cricket authorities. Officials are expected to review the incident, as physical confrontations are considered a serious breach of on-field conduct.

Unlike international matches, the ICC does not usually oversee disciplinary matters in A-team tournaments or appoint match officials for these Tri-Nation A Series games. As a result, any action against the players would likely be handled by the tournament organizers or the respective cricket boards.

The authorities will now decide whether any sanctions are necessary following the incident, which occurred after Sri Lanka A’s Super Over victory over India A.

The win moved the Sri Lanka A Cricket Team to the top of the points table with four points. Meanwhile, the India A Cricket Team suffered their second consecutive defeat after previously losing to the Afghanistan A Cricket Team.
