Dilip Doshi passes away at 77 in London during IND vs ENG Tests; reason OUT

Former Indian cricketer Dilip Doshi passed away at the age of 77 on June 23 due to cardiac arrest in London, where he had resided for decades. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar expressed their condolences over the passing of the former spinner.

Doshi is survived by his wife Kalindi, daughter Vishakha, and son Nayan, who also represented Surrey and Saurashtra at the first-class level. He, known for his classical left-arm spin and enviable control, made a late entry into international cricket, debuting for India at the age of 32 against Australia in 1979.

The Saurashtra Cricket Association confirmed the passing of Dilip Doshi on Monday. Former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah called it a deeply personal tragedy. He said that Doshi was not only a legendary cricketer but also one of the finest individuals he had known.

“It is an extremely painful and personal loss for me. Dilip was not only one of the legendary cricketers, but also one of the finest human beings I have ever known. His noble heart, integrity, and priceless dedication to the game made him truly special,” Shah, a close associate of Doshi, said.

Saurashtra Cricket Association president Jaydev Shah paid a heartfelt tribute to Dilip Doshi. Shah said that Doshi’s legacy as both a player and a person would remain etched in cricket history.

“His passing is an irreparable loss to the cricketing fraternity, and to all of us who had the honour of knowing him. His legacy, both as a player and a person, will continue to live in our hearts and in the history of cricket. This is an incredibly painful and personal loss for me. He was not just a legendary cricketer- he was my uncle, my mentor, and someone I looked up to throughout my life,” Jaydev Shah said.

Dilip Doshi Played 33 Tests and 15 ODIs in International Cricket

Dilip Doshi made an impact in his debut series against Australia in 1979, picking up 6/103 in his first match and delivering a match-winning 8-wicket haul to seal an innings victory for India.

Doshi played 33 Tests in his international career from 1979 to 1983. He picked up 114 wickets at an average of 30.71, including six five-wicket hauls. The former spinner also featured in 15 ODI matches between 1980 and 1982, taking 22 wickets at an impressive average of 23.81, with a best of 4/30.

He delivered one of his most iconic performances during the 1981 Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The spinner was instrumental in India’s overseas victory despite battling through a fractured toe.

InDoshi took 898 wickets in 238 first-class matches at an average of 26.58. He represented Saurashtra, Bengal, Warwickshire, and Nottinghamshire during a decorated domestic career. Doshi retired from international cricket in the 1980s and shared his experiences in his autobiography, Spin Punch.
