A century from Azhar Ali and staunch support by Asad Shafiq frustrated Australia’s bowlers in a rain-interrupted first session on day two with Pakistan’s batsmen still very much in occupation at the MCG.

Resuming on an overcast day that was likely to feature showers, Azhar and Shafiq showed good composure to work through the early spells of the Australian pacemen then rotating the strike when Nathan Lyon’s spin was introduced. Before play, the coach Mickey Arthur expressed hope that Pakistan would be able to reach 300 – that and more is now well and truly in sight.
