Cachopa extends Sussex stay

Sussex batsman Craig Cachopa has penned a new one-year contract extension that will see him remain at the County Ground until the end of the 2017 season.

Since arriving at Sussex during the 2014 campaign, Cachopa boosted their batting depth with impressive performances across all formats, going on to claim the Young Player of the Year award at the season’s conclusion.

Cachopa continued to produce the goods as he starred during the Sharks’ NatWest T20 Blast campaign in 2015, averaging 41.57.

He scored an unbeaten 89 in a 144-run fourth-wicket stand alongside Matt Machan, the second-highest partnership for Sussex in T20 cricket, in their victory over Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

The former New Zealand Under-19 captain, who has spent the winter with Wellington as an overseas player, was delighted to put pen to paper.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be extending my stay here at Sussex and I’m very grateful for the faith that the club are showing in me,” Cachopa said.

“Sussex is a great club, and one that I know will bounce back strongly. I feel very settled and happy in Brighton, and I’m excited to be a part of this young team moving forward.”

Head coach Mark Davis believes there is still more to come from the South African-born batsman.

“To have Craig extend his contract at Sussex confirms our belief in his ability,” he said.

“Craig is an extremely talented, versatile young player with a bright future. I believe we will see great things from this young player in the years to come.”
