Delhi Daredevils captain Zaheer Khan won the toss and opted to bowl on what he termed as a “slow surface” at the Feroz Shah Kotla. He explained that Daredevils’ young batting line-up would be better off, knowing the target, instead of setting one. The hosts made two changes with allrounder JP Duminy replacing opener Mayank Agarwal and offspinner Jayant Yadav replacing fast bowler Nathan Coulter Nile. This was Duminy’s first competitive match, after sustaining a hamstring injury during the match against Afghanistan in the World T20.

Kings XI Punjab captain David Miller admitted that he had preferred to bowl as well. They made a solitary change with allrounder Marcus Stonis making way for fellow Australian Shaun Marsh, who had missed Kings XI’s first match against Gujarat Lions because of food poisoning.
