New Zealand captain Kane Williamson chose to bowl in the first home Test of the summer against West Indies on a sunny morning in Wellington. The Basin Reserve sported a surface with plenty of grass, but Williamson said it was hard underneath.

New Zealand’s XI, which was announced on the eve of the match, included wicketkeeper Tom Blundell for his international debut in place of BJ Watling and fast bowler Matt Henry for Tim Southee, who was unavailable due to paternity leave.

Batsman Sunil Ambris earned his Test debut after hitting a 145-ball 153 in West Indies’ only warm-up game of the tour. Shimron Hetmyer was also included, while Jermaine Blackwood was left out after a lean run leading up to the Test. With conditions expected to aid seam more than spin, West Indies drafted in fast bowler Miguel Cummins for legspinner Devendra Bishoo.
