New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat on what he called a “good surface” in the second T20 international in Rajkot. He announced two changes with wicketkeeper-batsman Glenn Phillips replacing Tom Latham and fast bowler Adam Milne taking Tim Southee’s spot.

Phillips had smashed an unbeaten 140 off 130 balls for New Zealand A in a thrilling tie, in List A cricket in Visakhapatnam last month.

The visitors’ decision to bat went down well with India captain Virat Kohli, who was wary of the dew and said that his plan was to bowl first. India handed an international debut to Hyderabad quick in place of Ashish Nehra, who is now retired from international cricket. Siraj picked up 10 wickets from six games in the last IPL season, including a four-for against Gujarat Lions. He subsequently impressed in India A’s tour of South Africa.

Having lost the first T20I by 53 runs, New Zealand need to win tonight if they are to force the series into a decider in Thiruvananthapuram.
