Amla and Elgar's double-century stand wears down Bangladesh

Lunch South Africa 411 for 1 (Elgar 172*, Amla 137*) v Bangladesh

It was hard to tell which of the two – the pitch or Bangladesh’s approach – was flatter during the morning session of the second day in Potchefstroom. Hosts South Africa scored at a higher run-rate than the first day as Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla thrived on the visitors’ tedium to take the score to 411 for 1 at lunch, adding 113 runs in 27 overs.

Elgar was unbeaten on 172, his highest Test score, off 353 balls. Amla, on the other hand, caught up with Graeme Smith’s tally of 27 Test centuries and ended the session on 137 not out off 197 balls.

As early as the first half hour, there was more focus on the timing of South Africa’s potential declaration than Bangladesh’s efforts, as the pitch seemed to get slower and had lower bounce. A few deliveries didn’t really rise up, but Elgar and Amla were up to the minor challenge.
