Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim decided to bowl against South Africa in the first Test at Senwes Park. The decision surprised home captain Faf du Plessis, who felt the pitch was dry like a “one-day” pitch.

Aiden Markram and Andile Phehlukwayo, who replaced Heino Kuhn and Theunis de Bruyn, were making their Test debuts. They were also the only two changes to the South African XI that last played in England.

This was the first Test in three years that Bangladesh were without Shakib Al Hasan, who was allowed to rest during the two Tests in South Africa. Mahmudullah returned in his place while Liton Das replaced the injured Soumya Sarkar. Imrul Kayes was back as opener, with Tamim Iqbal.

This match was the first Test being played in Potchefstroom in 15 years.
