Injured Mitchell Marsh almost certainly out of IPL

Mitchell Marsh, the Australia allrounder, faced a lengthy lay-off from cricket after undergoing shoulder surgery on Monday. His rehabilitation period has not been finalised yet, although it was highly likely that he would be ruled out of the IPL starting April 5, when he was supposed to play for Rising Pune Supergiant.

Marsh, who was until last week part of Australia’s Test squad in India, returned home after injuring his left shoulder during the second Test in Bengaluru. He subsequently underwent a surgery that could potentially put him out of action for close to nine months.

“Mitchell has been playing with a shoulder injury for most of the summer,” David Beakley, Australia’s team physio, explained after the Bengaluru Test. “We have been managing up until now, but unfortunately it has progressively deteriorated to a point where he is unable to function at the level required.”

Marsh, who was bought by Supergiant at the 2016 auction, had to leave the tournament midway last year due to a side strain. His absence may necessarily not be a big blow for the franchise, who have Ben Stokes, the season’s costliest signing at INR 14.5 crore (USD 2.16 million approx), and Dan Christian as frontline allrounders.
