McGlashan: Stokes ensured England didn’t seize up

Bangladesh’s spinners needed just 20 minutes on the fourth morning at Chittagong to wrap up England’s second innings and leave their batsmen needing 286 for victory in the first Test.

Resuming on 228 for 8, England added 12 more runs to their overnight score in 4.2 overs, with their hopes of setting a 300-plus target dented by the early loss Stuart Broad for 10, who threw himself at the crease after being called through for a quick single by Chris Woakes, but was run out by three yards.

Bangladesh, who had opened with the spin duo of Mehedi Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan, wasted no time in claiming the new ball, and the left-arm spin of Taijul Islam quickly finished off the innings by trapping Gareth Batty lbw for 3.

Bangladesh’s highest successful fourth-innings run-chase is 217, so England will be strong favourites to take a 1-0 series lead into next week’s second Test at Dhaka.
