‘Minnows in the running in T20’ – Amla

A self-confessed, “shellshocked” Faf du Plessis chose to bat in South Africa’s must-win match against Afghanistan in Mumbai. The previous two games at this venue were won by the chasing team but du Plessis backed his attack to defend with dew unlikely to become a factor later on because of the afternoon start.

South Africa were without Dale Steyn, who was left out of the XI. No explanation was given for Steyn’s omission, other than that it made room for seamer David Wiese, who du Plessis said would offer variety in the bowling and lengthen the batting line-up.

Afghanistan made three changes to their XI, with Gulbadin Naib back in the top four, Amir Hamza bolstering the spin department and Shapoor Zadran the attack. Hamid Hassan was left out.
