Angelo Mathews has been named captain of the Sri Lankan team for the T20 World Cup that starts in India on Tuesday. Mathews, who is Sri Lanka’s Test skipper, replaces Lasith Malinga, who stepped down as skipper on Monday.

Sri Lanka sacked their selectors on Tuesday after the defending T20 World Cup played poor cricket in the just-concluded Asia Cup in Bangladesh. Although Mathews was below par in the Asia Cup, his experience tilted the scales in his favour.

Malinga’s participation in the T20 World Cup is also doubtful. He played only one match in the Asia Cup and rested a troublesome left knee for most of the tournament. Sri Lanka hope to have him in their first match on March 17 in Kolkata.

Sri Lanka have made two changes in their squad. Lahiru Thirimanne and Suranga Lakmal have replaced leg-spinner Jeffery Vandersay and keeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella. The decision to recall Thirimanne was taken by the new panel of selectors that includes Kumar Sangakkara and Aravinda de Silva.

FULL SQUAD for T20 World Cup: Angelo Mathews (capt), Dushmantha Chameera, Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Rangana Herath, Shehan Jayasuriya, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera, Sachithra Senanayake, Dasun Shanaka, Milinda Siriwardana, Suranga Lakmal
